Manchester United crowned Tesco Cup Champions
Manchester United U16 girls, representing England, were crowned UK champions at the Tesco Cup football final held at the Reebok Stadium on Sunday. The team took the honours after winning 1-0 against last year's champions Hibernian FC U16s.
Former Republic of Ireland player Andy Townsend and England women's goalkeeper Rachel Brown both attended the event and selected Saffron Jordan as Player of the Tournament for U16 girls with teammate Lakisha Deweever winning ‘Forward of the Tournament.'
Manchester United Team Manager Zeki Istanbul said, ‘Today has been absolutely brilliant. The girls have worked really hard to get here and deserved to win the UK final. Let's hope Manchester United first team will emulate today's victory and win the Champions League final on Wednesday!'
Andy Towsend and Rachel Brown also chose the following players for individual awards:
Best Goalkeeper: Maden Phaenthaisong (Llanidloes)
Best Defender: Chloe Archibald (YMCA Ladies)
Best Midfielder: Siobhan Hunter (Hibernian Girls FC)
Best Forward: Lakisha Deweever (Manchester United Girls)
Player of the tournament: Saffron Jordan (Manchester United Girls)
