SCOTLAND TRIUMPH IN BATTLING TESCO CUP VICTORY

HIBS Girls manager Matt Hunter was the proudest man in Manchester after his side were crowned Tesco Cup Home Nations champions at the City of Manchester Stadium last weekend.

The under-16 girls – who were representing Scotland – had already achieved national glory seeing off Celtic 9-8 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Stirling earlier this month.

And Hibs picked up where they left off in the round robin final beating Wales representatives Cardiff City 3-0 thanks to goals from Anja McConnochie, Claire Emslie and Siobhan Hunter.

Hunter, who is the manager's daughter, was then on the scoresheet again as English champions Bedwell Rangers were beaten 2-1 to ensure the Tesco Cup would be heading north of the border.

“I think the girls have really shown what they are about,” said Hunter. “They were up for every game and I'm really proud of all of them.
“They have been looking forward to it for a long time now and there were a lot of nerves before it started.

“They were very nervous in the Scottish final but to play in a stadium like this is a great experience even though it is quite daunting. They'll learn a lot from this and hopefully they will keep going in their careers and remember this day.

England side Bedwell Rangers finished runners up by virtue of their 3-0 win over Wales and there was further consolation for the Hertfordshire side as midfielder Megan Wynne was named player of the tournament by watching Tesco Cup ambassadors and ex Arsenal and England stars Paul Merson and Marieanne Spacey.

Other individual awards went to Hannah Reid from Scotland (Best Goalkeeper), England defender Josie Green, Scotland midfielder Siobhan Hunter and Welsh forward Zoe Atkins.
